About Me

Hi, I’m Miro Koutaniemi - hockey fan, stats geek, and the one-person crew behind QuantHockey.

I launched QuantHockey back in 2008 with no prior experience in web development - just some general programming background and a passion for hockey stats. I’ve always enjoyed digging into statistical yearbooks from leagues around the world, and at the time, I felt existing hockey websites weren’t making the most of the data that was out there. So eventually, I decided to get in the mix myself.

Over the years, QuantHockey has grown into a site packed with visualizations, sortable stats, and tools that let you compare players and teams across various dimensions. From the NHL to major junior leagues to international tournaments, there’s something for every stats-loving hockey brain - and more is being added all the time.

Everything you see on the website - the good and the bad - has been developed and designed by me. Many of the ideas for tools and illustrations, however, have come from you - the users of the site - and for that, I’m truly grateful. The site is nothing without the people who enjoy it.

A Quick Throwback…

Fun fact: In the mid-80s, when I was 11, I spent a year in Maryland with my family and played hockey for a local team called the Montgomery Blue Devils. The Washington Capitals used to host a shootout competition during intermissions, where one player and one goalie from local junior teams would battle it out. I represented my team - and we won. I ended up participating in three different intermission shootouts at Capitals games (Yes, I peaked early).

Other than that, my own hockey career has been so obscure that even Elite Prospects hasn’t found me 😊.
