AHL Nationality Breakdown

Players in the American Hockey League (AHL) were approximately 80 percent Canadian until the early 1990s. The proportion of American players hovered around 15 percent, with Europeans making up the remaining five percent.

After the collapse of Soviet union in 1991, the proportion of European players began to rise as players from the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia signed contracts with North American teams. At the same time, American players gradually increased their presence in the AHL. In the early 2000s, the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (started in 1996) began pushing high-caliber American players into professional leagues, and the proportion of American players rose to over 25%.

The proportion of Canadian players in the AHL has steadily declined over the years, settling at below 50 percent.

The chart below shows the relative proportions of different nationalities in the AHL from the 1977-1978 season onwards. Data used in the chart can be found on the nationality totals statistics pages.
