NHL Average Assists per Goal from 1917‑18 to 2016‑17
Average number of assists awarded for each goal scored has been gradually creeping up during the NHL history. In other words, more assists are being awarded for each goal scored. This could be due to number of reasons. Perhaps the share of power-play goals has increased resulting in more assists per goal; Or maybe officiating has become more relaxed and assists are being awarded more generously.
The number of assists credited for each goal is also consistently lower in the playoffs than during the regular season.
